Learn a traditional martial art with modern day application.

What is Chidokan Karate- Do

Chidokan Karate- Do is a Shotokan karate style. It's lineage can be traced back to the founder of Shotokan Karate- Do, Gichin Funakoshi.

Chidokan was brought to Sydney Australia by Kyoshi John Clutterbuck in 1969.

The style has evolved over the years and is a traditional karate school with practical application of it's kata in self defence scenarios.

Kata is the heart of Chidokan Karate-Do.

Our Training Approach

We teach anyone from teenagers (16 years) and over. Unfortunately, we don't offer kids' classes.

Our training syllabus covers all aspects of Karate training, from fundamentals, exercises, kata, application of kata and kata-based sparring.

Fundamentals - we practice our individual and movement techniques in isolation, in dynamic training exercises, with a training partner, bag work and in training scenarios.

Kata - not just the solo performance. We explore the fighting principles of the kata, the bunkai (real-world application) of the movements in the kata, and practice them with a training partner.

Kata-based sparring - as a style, we have evolved away from the one-step, three-step, five-step and free-style point sparring.

Our sparring takes the movement and application from kata against a resistant partner and in common self-defence scenarios.
